The Edible School Yard Project

The Edible School Yard Project, created by Alice Waters, connects students with all aspects of food, from growing, to cooking and sharing at the table. Waters, founder of the famous Berkeley, California restaurant Chez Panisse, has been a champion of local and organic farms for over four decades. She was instrumental in changing the American food landscape, and wanted to bring her ideas to the public education system. The holistic approach of Edible School Yard Project is reflected in the program’s three strategic areas: building an education model, mapping and engaging the movement, and advocacy. They designed an “edible education” curriculum for middle school students, as well as a website, which serves as a global resource for education programs. As a whole, the project’s efforts address the multitude of health and hunger problems that face children worldwide.
