Boroume is a nonprofit organization that fights food waste by organizing the distribution of surplus food for charity throughout Greece. Boroume bridges communication between food donors and recipient organizations. The organization has been creating these networks since 2011 and creates long-term relationships among those who give and receive food.
Boroume has been responsible for food donations in more than 80 cities in Greece. with more than 1500 portions of food being provided through their network every day. Boroume works within communities to ensure that there is sufficient food for those in need. Companies and individuals donate food that is in perfect condition, but would otherwise be wasted. According to their website, Boroume accepts donations from “restaurants, bakeries, fruit markets, hotels, and pastry shops as well as from private and corporate events. Furthermore, institutions such as schools and companies do food runs, and individuals and groups of people gather and cook food with the purpose of donating it.”
Working with social services, Boroume donates food to families and individuals who are being supported by their church or welfare groups. They also donate to over 800 welfare institutions, soup kitchens, and municipal social services. Since opening their doors, Boroume has provided more than 800,000 portions of food in Greece.
