MISSION
Food Tank is the world’s fastest growing global non-profit community working towards positive transformation in how we produce and consume food. As one of the food and agriculture movement’s most dynamic conveners and most impactful research and advocacy organizations, we educate, advocate, and collaborate with local partners to amplify on the ground solutions.
Our food system is broken.
Food Tank is a global community that inspires, motivates, and activates positive transformation in how we produce and consume food.
We’re good as a global economy at filling people up, but we are not good at nourishing eaters. What if we placed value on crop and livestock systems that are healthy for people and the planet? That provide delicious, nutrient-dense food, that protect workers and the environment, that are regenerative and give back more than they take? A food system that carefully accounts for externalities and makes it more profitable to be sustainable?
Food Tank is for farmers and producers, policy makers and government leaders, researchers and scientists, academics and journalists, and the funding and donor communities to collaborate on providing sustainable solutions for our most pressing environmental and social problems.
We bridge the domestic and global food issues by highlighting how hunger, malnutrition, those experiencing obesity, the climate crisis, unemployment, and other problems can be solved by more research and investment in sustainable agriculture and food systems.
We feature innovative ideas that are already working on the ground, in cities, in kitchens, in fields and in laboratories. These innovations need more attention, more research, and ultimately more funding to be replicated and scaled-up. And that is where we need you. We all need to work together to find solutions that nourish ourselves and protect the planet.
How do we do this? Here are some of the ways: (1) we run the largest network of food business chief sustainability officers, (2) we run an academic working group featuring food studies and adjacent faculty from all 50 States, (3) we try to change culture with our annual Food Tank Summits at the Sundance Film Festival, SXSW, develop original theatrical plays/musicals about food systems issues accepted at festivals like Edinburgh Fringe, (4) we run a Summit series with the CDC Foundation and the White House Office of Engagement to advance the Biden-Harris Hunger, Health and Nutrition Challenge along with regular non-partisan food educational programming on Capitol Hill, (5) we are a leading convener of food and agriculture programming annually at the U.N. Climate Change Conference (COP), NYC Climate Week, London Climate Week and World Food Day, (5) we publish original research daily on FoodTank.com, along with original reports, books, a weekly podcast that routinely ranks near the top of the Apple Podcast food charts, a weekly newsletter with more than 350,000 subscribes, and a combined social media following of over 1 million, (6) Danielle Nierenberg speaks and moderates at over 100 events a year including the Milken Institute Global Conference, the James Beard Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, the UN FAO, and so, so much more.
Food Tank was founded by Danielle Nierenberg and Bernard Pollack in January of 2013 in Chicago, Illinois. Food Tank is a registered 501(c)(3), and all donations are tax-deductible.
