Garjana, a new fitness concept to raise money for Food Tank, is bringing together hundreds of New Yorkers for a one-hour completely immersive dance workout experience on April 26, 2017, at the Highline Ballroom.
“The event will be explosive with innovative dance moves, awesome props, cool visuals, and great food, all supporting an amazing cause,” says Kevin Arbouet, award-winning director and designer of all visuals for the event. “NYC has no idea what is about to hit. Garjana is about to catch fire.”
Five dancers, including past and present Broadway performers, will lead attendees in synchronized dance moves, set to original music and fully immersed in visuals specially created for the event. The choreography will be aimed at all levels of ability.
“This is so much more than workout—it’s a celebration! Garjana is about all us dancing together, unleashing our joy, being connected. It’s great to come together for Food Tank and I can’t wait to bring this movement to other cities,” says Monica Kapoor, Garjana’s choreographer and Broadway and television performer. Her performing credits include a seven-year stint in Mamma Mia on Broadway, as well as Bombay Dreams, NBC’s Smash, and more.
The fundraiser’s music is written and produced by Douglas Romanow, a Toronto-based producer who has worked with major artists such as Justin Bieber and Tyga. The first Garjana single and music video, “This is What It Feels Like,” featuring some of the cast of the show, was released in February 2017.
Following the dance workout, participants can enjoy a pop-up farmers’ market with free food and drink tastings from local New York City producers.
Food Tank will use the profits from this event to promote efforts in New York City to reduce food waste, including the inaugural New York City Food Tank Summit on September 13 at WNYC Studios.
Partners include the New York City Food Policy Center, Edible Manhattan, Edible East End, Edible Brooklyn, GrowNYC, WhyHunger, NYC Bollywood Funk, Body Conceptions, Broadway Bodies, Dance Cardio Plus, Stumptown Coffee, Icelandic Glacial, KIND, and Harmless Harvest.
