Food Tank will commemorate the United Nations World Food Day on October 16, 2017, with a special event in New York City. This year—for the first time in several years—hunger is increasing across the globe. A U.N. report released just a few weeks ago finds that today 815 million around the globe suffer from hunger, a nearly 20 million increase from previous years. And with the American South and the Caribbean reeling from Hurricanes Irma and Maria and flooding across Asia, the urgent need to nourish those in need is more important now than ever before.
Food Tank will hold a special fundraiser on Monday, October 16, to bring attention to the impact of climate change and social injustice on the world’s hungry. In collaboration with #GiveHealthy and Feeding America, the event will be held at Union Square Ballroom from 5:30pm to 7:00pm,
Sustainable catering company Great Performances will provide tasty, healthy food, Daybreaker’s DJ Vikas will spin original music, and fire breathers (!!) will entertain the crowd. The audience will be treated to a special performance of the immersive dance experience Garjana, led by Broadway stars from shows such as Mamma Mia, Aladdin, Wicked, and more. These dancers will guide participants through a fun dance party using cool props, and those with two left feet—including Food Tank’s own president Danielle Nierenberg—will be warmly welcomed.
“Garjana is about joy. Everyone is able to follow, feel good, look good, and connected to the energy of everyone in the room,” says Mamma Mia’s Monica Kapoor and Garjana’s choreographer.
In addition, participants will enjoy electrifying performances from some of New York City’s top dance studios including Broadway Bodies, Fit4Dance, Freedom Dakbe Group, Doonya, and Dance in Tribeca.
Hundreds of participants have attended each of Garjana’s previous events, selling out NYC’s iconic music hall the Highline Ballroom. In November, Garjana will have its first event in Washington, D.C., as part of an effort to highlight World Diabetes Day. Please join us!
