The Nebraska Sustainable Agriculture Society (NSAS) is a non-profit whose mission it is to promote agriculture and food systems that build healthy land, people, communities, and protect quality of life for present and future generations. NSAS brings together farmers, ranchers, rural and urban consumers, market gardeners, educators, families and restaurateurs to create a strong local food system.
Food Tank had the opportunity to speak with William Powers, Executive Director of the Nebraska Sustainable Agriculture Society.
Food Tank (FT): How do you contribute to creating a better food system?
William Powers (WP): The Nebraska Sustainable Agriculture Society has been promoting sustainable and organic farming and foods in Nebraska and the Midwest for over 40 years. Our earliest projects included starting some of the earliest farmers markets in the country, including the oldest in Nebraska. We’ve worked to bring farmers and eaters alike to the table for conversations and meals geared at putting the culture back in our food.
FT: What is a project, program, or result you are most proud of? Please explain.
WP: Our staple program is our Healthy Farms Conference. Held annually since the 1960s, the Healthy Farms Conference provides the opportunities for farmers and eaters to connect, learn, and engage on the issues, practices, and the community that is agriculture.
FT: What are your goals for 2015 and beyond?
WP: Our goals include expanding the base and foundation of sustainable foods and farms in Nebraska and the Midwest. From programming for young farmers, to resources and opportunities for seasoned veterans of farming to expand and collaborate, we hope to continue to lay the foundation for sustainable agriculture.
FT: In one sentence, what is the most important thing eaters and consumers can do today to support a more sustainable food system?
WP: We are all in this together and it is crucial for eaters and farmers to continue forming a culture around our food
FT: How can individuals become more involved in your organization?
WP: We have numerous opportunities for folks to be involved in NSAS. As a membership based nonprofit led by farmers and for farmers, we encourage folks to join the organization and be a part of the conversation of agriculture in Nebraska!
