A passionate supporter of local foods since a young age, Bernadine (Bernie) Prince is the co-founder and co-executive director of FRESHFARM Markets in Washington, DC since 1997. A vocal advocate for access and affordability of local food for those of all income levels, Bernie created the SNAP and Matching Dollars programs at FRESHFARM Markets that enable low-income residents to buy more healthy foods at FRESHFARM Markets every week. She created FoodPrints, a nutrition education program for elementary school children that encourages growing and eating healthy food through a curriculum based program that is now in five DC elementary schools and has been cited as a model for nutrition education in the District. Prince is currently President of the national Farmers Market Coalition. She and her husband Ray own a 10-acre farm (Blue Skies Farm) in Georgetown, Delaware where they are growing organic fruit, vegetables and flowers.
