The World Congress on Agroforestry, co-hosted by The World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF), The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and The Indian Society of Agroforestry is taking place this week in Delhi, India. Agroforestry is an integrated approach combining trees, shrubs, and crops to create more diverse, productive, profitable, healthy, and sustainable land use. Agroforestry practices have the potential to address food security, poverty, mitigate climate change, restore degraded land, and rebuild rural landscapes.
The Congress will increase awareness, support, engagement, and investment in agroforestry. The event has an innovative structure, including pre-Congress meetings, social media platforms, web-based consultations, buzz groups, keynote and panel discussions, and a marketplace. There will be between 1200-1500 participants including; Tony Simons, director of ICRAF; S. Ayyappan, director-general of ICAR; and Michael Hailu, director of the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA). Building on previous Congress sessions, this year will act as a springboard for next steps in creating change, using integrative science, innovative tree-based value chains, and sustainable land reformation, to build livelihoods and revitalize the land.
