Turning Green (TG), a student-led environmental nonprofit, will host its annual online competition, Project Green Challenge (PGC), this Fall starting October 1. PGC is a powerful and diverse call to action to engage, empower, and mobilize high school and college students globally around environmentally sustainable and socially responsible actions. Last year, PGC Class of 2016 engaged 4,018 students representing 536 schools from all 50 states and 37 countries.
Now in its seventh year, PGC presents 30 days of environmentally themed challenges including food, fair trade, energy, zero waste, water, etc. Participants are challenged to question the status quo and implement positive change in their daily lives, school campuses, and communities. Each day students can partake in up to four levels of challenges (Green, Greener, Greenest, and Extra Credit) and up to 20 challenge submissions are awarded eco-prize packages for each theme. At the end of October, up to 16 finalists are selected and flown to the San Francisco Bay area to partake in the PGC Finals, where one finalist will be named the PGC 2017 Champion and awarded the Grand Prize Package valued at more than US$10,000.
“Even after PGC, my actions are still having an impact. People are continuing to watch my videos, read my posts, and talk with me about how I live consciously and how they can do the same. PGC ignited a passion for justice and newborn vibrancy inside me. This experience has led me into a new chapter of my life, a chapter filled with a social mission and purpose. Every student in the world should sign up for PGC! It truly is life-changing,” said Missy Martin, 2015 PGC Champion.
Through conscious living, informed consumption, and collective action, Turning Green aims to inspire the next generation of eco-leaders. “The success of this global initiative is a true testament to the heart and hope this generation has for a healthy, just, and thriving planet,” says Judi Shils, Founder and Executive Director of Turning Green.
