Getting teenagers interested in aquaculture seems like a daunting task, but initiatives in Nigeria have proven it is well worth the effort. An organization that focuses on sustainable agriculture, The West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development (CORAF), recently reported that the Nigerian government is using its West Africa Agricultural Productivity Program (WAAPP) to increase mainstream interest in aquaculture, especially among teenagers. Aquaculture in education has been a focus of Nigeria since 2014. According to CORAF, aquaculture and fish farming is a growing, sustainable industry in Nigeria, creating enormous potential for fish products.
CORAF notes that the WAAPP is increasing interest in aquaculture through its presence in high schools and in rural Nigeria, where villagers and students are raising catfish and tilapia. In schools such as Kings College in Lagos, integrated fisheries have become part of the curriculum; and in some schools, the topic is gaining interest in the form of fishery clubs.
