Food Tank recently had the opportunity to speak with Vicky Rateau, Economic Justice Campaign Manager at Oxfam America, who was one of the speakers at the 2015 Food Tank Summit in partnership with The George Washington University.
Food Tank (FT): What will your message be at the Food Tank Summit?
Vicky Rateau (VR): We must reform our global food system by addressing climate change, land grabs, and supporting small holder farmers. And it starts with supporting women producers.
FT: How are you contributing to building a better food system?
VR: Oxfam’s global campaign is in 52 countries, where we aim to change local, national and global rules.
FT: What are the biggest obstacles or challenges you face in achieving your organization’s goals?
VR: We are not a single-issue campaign, and sourcing our ambitious goals is a challenge.
FT: Who is your food hero and why?
VR: Aaron Silverman, chef & owner of Rose’s Luxury. His new restaurant is the epitome of sustainable food values. He sources from local producers, and a portion of his proceeds go to support global food security.
FT: In 140 characters or fewer, what is the most important thing we can all do to help change the food system?
VR: What does a fair food system look like? The right to food is realized. This means the responsible use of natural resources.
